Content Query Web Part with Yes/No Checkbox field

Recently I was creating a custom Content Query Web Park using Heather Solomon’s great walkthrough.  I was trying to set up a query using a custom site column of the type Yes/No which displays as a checkbox.

Initially I set up the properties of the web part to filter on the field looking for the value “Yes”, like this:

But applying this resulted in this sorry message in the web part on the page:

The query has returned no items

I knew there were at least two items that should match the query, so I tried switching from “Yes” to “1” and applied the query again.  This time it returned the items that I expected.
